Privacy Platform – Secure Science: Research and Data Protection
Will the proposals for new EU data protection legislation impede medical, social or historical research?
The theme of this edition of the Privacy Platform is Secure Science: Research and New Data Protection Rules. The panel will explore the possible consequences of the new Data Protection Regulation for academic and commercial research purposes. Two research fields that will be discussed more specifically are those of medical and historical research. What would be the impact of respectively the Commission proposal for a new Data Protection Regulation and the position adopted by the responsible European Parliamentary committee on 21 October 2013?
The medical and historical research communities have raised objections to the ambitions of the Commission and Parliament. The talking points will be, among others, specific concerns regarding the explicit consent and right to deletion requirements, and the special regime for medical research (Article 81 of the proposed Regulation).
