The Romanian Democracy
The purpose of the hearing is to analyze the newest developments regarding the straying of the democratic principles in Romania. Why are Romanians protesting and what are are the main abuses they are complaining about? European leaders, Romanian politicians, civil society representatives and journalists aim to establish a dialogue which has been refused until now. The meeting will be hosted by Hannes Swoboda, leader of the S&D Group in the EP and Guy Verhofstadt, leader of the ALDE Group in the EP. Our special guests are the co-presidents of the main opposition alliance in Romania, the Social Liberal Union (USL) – Victor Ponta (president of the Social Democratic Party – PSD), Crin Antonescu (president of the National Liberal Party – PNL) and Daniel Constantin (president of the Conservative Party - PC). Two prominent NGO representatives - Cristian Pârvulescu (president of Pro Democracy Association) and Victor Alistar (executive director of Transparency International Romania), as well as leading journalist R?zvan Dumitrescu and Liviu Voinea, PhD in Economics, will participate in this debate.
About the Organiser
In 1972, he became President of the Liberal Flemish Students' Union in Ghent and, four years later, was elected as a City Councillor there. Keen to follow his interest in national politics, Guy went on to take a number of high profile posts including Political Secretary to Willy De Clercq, National President of the Party for Freedom and Progress (PVV), an MP in the House of Representatives, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for the Budget, a Senator, and National President of the PVV and National President of the Flemish Liberals and Democrats (VLD).
In July 1999 he became Prime Minister of Belgium, heading three separate governments over the course of nearly ten years.
In June 2009 Guy Verhofstadt was elected to the European Parliament where he will pursue his interests in European politics after winning the unanimous support of the ALDE Group in their leadership contest.
